The Barbados Royals Women took on the Trinbago Knight Riders Women in the Final of the WCPL 2024. This match was being played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinindad.

Hayley Matthews started the collapse of the Knight Riders

The skipper of the Barbados Royals Women, Hayley Matthews won the toss and decided to field first in the game. The captain herself led her bowlers as she picked up her opposite number, Deandra Dottin in the second over and rocked the Knight Riders early.

The Trinbago Knight Riders failed to bounce back from the early shoch and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Jannilea Glasgow (24 off 31) and Shikha Pandey (28 off 31) showed some resilience and took the team towards the 100-mark. However, the lower-order, barring Kycia Knight, failed to carry on the good work and crumbled. The Knights were restricted to a score of just 93/8 in their 20 overs. Aaliyah Alleyne starred with the ball for the Barbados Royals with figures of 4/21 in her four overs.

The Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues, who came into this game with a fifty behind her back failed to delivery for the team under pressure. After a 59*(50) in the last game, all Jemimah managed in the big final was 2(6).

Chamari Athapaththu led the Royals to a win in a nervy chase

It was expected that the Royals will chase down the traget easily given the power that they have in the batting. However, it was not the case as despite a great start, the Royals too suffered a collapse that put the game in the balance for a while. Hayley Matthews and Chamari Athapaththu stitched a partnership of 48 runs for the first wicket and set the tone for the chase. But after this they lost wickets in bunches and the Knight Riders were trying to fight their way back into the game.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder and star cricketer, Chamari Athapaththu held her composure and ensured that the Royals did not suffer another slip-up in their chase. She remained unbeaten on 39 off 47 and guided the team to a four wicket win with 24 balls remaining.

The win meant that the Royals have won their second WCPL title on the bounce. They now have the most number of trophies in this tournament, as they have bagged two of the three seasons that have been played.
