The Guyana Amazon Warriors Women played against the Barbados Royals Women in the first game of the WCPL 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba. 

The Barbados Royals won the toss and opted to field first in the game. Natasha McLean opened the innings for the Warriors along with Lauren Winfield-Hill. McLean did not last long in the middle as she was dismissed by Joseph for 11 runs off 12 deliveries. 

McLean displayed her power in her short stay

However, during her short stay in the middle, McLean played hit a maximum against Hayley Matthews which got the viewers excited. It was the fourth delivery of the second over, when McLean decided to steps down the track and take the attack to the bowler. 

Matthews bowled a tossed up the ball at the off and middle stump line. McLean shimmied down the track and went after it but was deceived by the flight. As a result she lost her bottom hand grip while lofting the ball towards long-on. However, she has enough power in the shot to take the ball just over long-on fence.

Talking about the match, the Warriors posted 118/9 in their 20 overs, with Stafanie Taylor being their highest scorer with 38 from 36. Alliyah Alleyne starred with the ball for the Royals as she picked up three wickets for 21 runs in her four overs. 

Hayley Matthews played a captain's knock in the chase for the Royals. She scored 61 runs off 58 deliveries and stayed there till the end to take the team to victory. The Royals lost nine wickets and the game went down to the last over. But it was Matthews's composure that saw the Royals register a win in the season opener by one wicket with a delivery remaining.
