On Saturday, January 10, the Gujarat Giants locked horns against UP Warriorz for the second match of WPL 2026. In the ongoing match at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Giants, batting first, put a whopping total of 207/4 on the board after 20 overs, courtesy of a fifty from skipper Ashleigh Gardner.
In reply, UP Warriorz, led by Meg Lanning, lost an early wicket but found confidence back with a 70-run stand for the 2nd wicket. However, on the 3rd ball of the eighth over, Georgia Wareham got rid of Meg Lanning and trapped her in front of the wicket. The former DC captain opted for a review and argued with the on-field umpire on her way back to the pavilion after an unsuccessful DRS.
Meg Lanning exchanges words with the on-field umpire
Lanning looked good and was batting on 30 (26). However, Wareham tricked the Australian legend in front of the wicket. It was a long wait for the 33-year-old during DRS, and eventually, she seemed unhappy with the decision.
On her way back, Lanning exchanged a few words with the umpire, but the exact detail of the conversation is not known. Although the umpire was calm, it seemed that Lanning had a query, which she sought clarification of from the official present on the ground. Eventually, the matter was resolved within a few seconds, and Lanning continued her walk back to the dressing room.
UP Warriorz racing towards a historic win
After Lanning’s dismissal, UP lost two more quick wickets, and they were on the brink of an embarrassing defeat. However, Phoebe Litchfield and Shweta Sehrawat took the onus on themselves and stitched a quickfire fifty-plus runs stand to bring UP back into the hunt.
Litchfield has been the main figure in this partnership, and the Australian star is nearing a century, which will be the first in the history of WPL. Talking about the ongoing match, at the time of writing this article, UP are 143/5 after 15 overs.
