Keshav Maharaj proved his mettle for South Africa by dismissing Sri Lankan top-order batter Sadeera Samarawickrama in the fourth match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Nassau County Stadium on Monday (June 3).

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Sri Lanka aimed for a mammoth total. However, South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj struck, first removing Sri Lanka's skipper Wanindu Hasaranga in his second over and then taking down Samarawickrama on the very next ball.

The incident occurred in the ninth over of the match when Keshav Maharaj delivered a good-length ball just outside off stump, angling back in. With Sri Lanka at 32 for 4, Samarawickrama attempted to play on the backfoot but was deceived as the ball went through the gate and hit the stumps.

Maharaj, pumped up from his success, celebrated with his teammates as these crucial wickets gave South Africa a strong start. 

At the time of writing, the Lankan Tigers are struggling at 44 for 5 in 11 overs, with Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathews at the crease.
