[Watch] Lockie Ferguson's 'Killer Bouncer' Catches Shakib Al Hasan Off Guard

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was undone by a menacing bouncer from New Zealand pace enforcer Lockie Ferguson in the ICC World Cup 2023 league stage encounter in Chennai on Friday (October 13).

The aggressive left-hander, who had brought his team back in the contest with a measured knock of 40 off 51 deliveries, couldn't keep an attempted slog down after the short-pitched ball from Ferguson got too big on his hook shot.

The skipper top-edged the delivery from the Kiwi right-arm pacer, and was taken expertly by experienced wicketkeeper Tom Latham. The BlackCaps glover made excellent ground to cover for the catch, with New Zealand keeping no fine leg inside the 30-yard circle.

Since the square leg was too far off, the top edge ballooned to the no man's land and, therefore, required Latham to make an incredible effort for what was one of the better takes of the tournament so far. A specialist batter first and keeper second, Latham showed great agility and execution for the grab.

If he revisits his dismissal, Shakib would realise he could've kept his ego aside and ducked the steep-rising ball from Ferguson. Especially keeping in mind the situation of the game. The left-hander had to work extensively hard to bring Bangladesh back into the contest after they were reduced to 4 for 56.

Shakib had stitched an astute fifth-wicket stand with the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim of 96 runs to restore a decent footing for the Bangla Tigers. However, his aggressive instincts took over when Ferguson got a bouncer to rise off the deck from the over-the-wicket angle.

The leading allrounder could've ducked the ball for what could've been an easy wide over the batter's head. But he paid the ultimate price for his attempted hook intended to go for a maximum towards the square-leg region, finding a top edge that Latham spotted early and sprinted to complete the catch.

Ferguson looked delighted with the breakthrough, having drawn Shakib into a risky stroke when the situation called for watchful batting. Shakib had only one ball before surviving an equally risky pull shot for six. It was a typical enforcer's wicket as the speed and hostility of the ball got the batter committing to something out of the blue and paying for it with his wicket.
