Kusal Perera has had a torrid time lately due to a lack of performance and confidence in the 2023 World Cup. However, the veteran opener returned to his good-old form against Australia by notching a scintillating half-century on Monday in Lucknow.

More importantly, how Perera got to his 16th ODI fifty garnered much attention.

It was the third ball of the 19th over by Marcus Stoinis, a slower ball pitched at full length. Perera was waiting for that only, and he sent it back over Stoinis’ head to smack a statement boundary.

Perera seemed relieved when he got there, and he raised his bat soon after.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat. Perera and Pathum Nissanka gave them a solid start, having forged 125 runs without losing any wicket.

As of writing, Sri Lanka have reached 145/1 after 24 overs, with Perera batting on 70* off 72 balls. Kusal Mendis, who is leading Sri Lanka following Dasun Shanaka's injury, is batting from other end, on 4* off five balls.
