'Babar Azam Was Extremely Timid': Gautam Gambhir Lashes Out At Pakistan Captain

Currently leading his team in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, one of the best all-format batters in world cricket, Pakistan's Babar Azam, ended up losing the much-awaited high-profile match against India on Saturday.

Pakistan suffered an absolute meltdown after the fall for Azam's wicket at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, losing their last eight wickets for 36, and giving India an easy 192-run target.

Azam top-scored with 50 but could not shift gears, which added additional pressure, leading to the fall of his wicket off Mohammed Siraj.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has called Azam's known as timid, and saying the skipper played for his own runs. Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir explained how Azam's batting goes against the grain of Pakistan's aggressive approach historically.

Here's what Gambhir said

“Babar Azam has been extremely timid. Two batters cannot bat the same way in a partnership, one of them has to take chances. If you are playing for a fifty or your runs, you will get such results.

Babar Azam has scored a lot of runs for himself but it's been Pakistan's history that they have liked to bat aggressively at the start, whether it was Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir or Taufeeq Umar, and they consolidate in the middle. However, here in the top three, there isn't a single batter who can take on the opposition attack,”

Pakistan are placed fourth in the points table with two wins and one loss but have their net run rate drop below minus. Azam and Co. will next face five-time champions Australia on October 20 in Bangalore.
