Friday's clash at the R Premadasa Stadium became the talk of the town as Dambulla Aura outclassed Galle Titans in a dominant seven-wicket win during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023's Match 14. The highlight reel of the game was the stunning 'Dhoni-esque' run out executed by the Aura's skipper, Kusal Mendis, sending Lahiru Samarakoon packing.

On a track that seemed a batting paradise, Mendis' audacious decision to bowl first after winning the toss paid dividends. The Aura's bowling brigade consistently choked the Titans' batsmen, ensuring they never settled.

Galle captain Dasun Shanaka scored a gritty 36 off 26 balls but met his demise at the hands of Hasan Ali, with Sadeera Samarawickrama sealing a stunning catch.

However, it was the final over's run-out that took the spotlight. Samarakoon's attempt for a second run, off a flick to the deep square, saw a swift throw by Samarawickrama to Mendis. Despite the throw being wide, Mendis, in a flash, redirected it Dhoni-style to knock down the stumps, leaving Samarakoon short of the crease.


Subsequently, the Titans were restricted to a modest 133/9 in their 20 overs. Dambulla Aura effortlessly chased down the total, with Avishka Fernando blazing away with 70 runs off 49 balls. Mendis contributed with 18 while Samarickrama chipped in with 28.

Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/31. The win catapulted Aura to the top of the LPL points table and relegated the Titans to the nadir.
