In an anti-climactic moment during the ICC World Cup 2023 clash at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, New Zealand's hopes of a smooth chase against Sri Lanka suffered a setback with the dismissal of their captain, Kane Williamson. The Kiwis, pursuing a challenging target of 172, were seemingly on course until Williamson's untimely exit.

NZ vs SL: Kane Williamson dismissed for 14 as Kiwis inch towards victory

Williamson, who had been cautiously building his innings, was at 14 runs off as many balls. The wicket came in the 19th over bowled by Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews. Williamson attempted to cut a good-length delivery just outside the off-stump, but an unfortunate inside edge resulted in the ball dragging back onto the stumps.

Meanwhile, the Kiwi innings had started with promise. Openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra provided a solid foundation, propelling the team to 86 runs in just over 12 overs. However, their back-to-back dismissals brought Williamson to the crease, and his fall as the third wicket added to the mounting pressure.

The Kiwis eventually won the game by 5-wickets and have placed more than one foot in the semis. Pakistan have little to no chance of qualifying for the knockouts.
