Jos Buttler had a wonderful start on Thursday (October 5) during England's World Cup 2023 opener against New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. However, the English skipper failed to carry on the momentum, as Matt Henry returned to bowl his second spell to dismiss him.

It was a back-of-a-length delivery by Henry in the 34th over which sent Buttler packing. The ball was too close to the body of Buttler, who wanted to cut it, only to get a thin outside edge. In Kane Williamson's absence, stand-in skipper Tom Latham completed an easy catch with the big gloves to end Buttler's stay after a superb 43-ball 42, laced with two sixes and as many fours.

New Zealand players were delighted to get Buttler's wicket at crucial juncture, considering the Englishman was steading the ship alongside Joe Root after England lost four wickets in 22 overs. Buttler, on the other hand, was upset on himself straightaway after playing that shot before starting to walk back to the pavilion.

At the time of writing, England are batting on 208/5 in 36 overs, with Joe Root batting on 70*. Liam Livingstone is batting on another end, on 13* off nine deliveries.
