Jonny Bairstow’s miserable World Cup 2023 campaign turned out to be a disastrous show, as the aggressive opener departed cheaply against a lowly Netherlands side on Wednesday. The Englishman scored 15 off 17 balls against the Dutch in Match 40 of the ongoing edition in Pune before throwing away his wicket to Aryan Dutt in a bizarre manner.
Bairstow is generally an excellent player against spin. But when things are not working out for you, you find yourself in awkward situations a lot. And it did indeed occur on Wednesday.
Aryan Dutt bowled a shortish delivery to Bairstow, which was bound to be smacked. However, the Englishman closed his bat face early while playing it, resulting in him finding a massive top edge. Paul van Meekeren, who was placed at short fine leg, made no mistake as Bairstow fell after yet another low score.

Opting to bat, England lost Bairstow yet again early. However, they managed to hold the fort, as Dawid Malan's fluent half-century, coupled with Joe Root's steady assist, took England to 73/1 after 11 overs.
