England star batter Joe Root had another rough outing against New Zealand in the second Test at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Root, who hasn’t been at his best lately, was dismissed cheaply once more, adding just 3 runs to England’s total.

England struggled early in their first innings after New Zealand chose to bowl first. The hosts made full use of home conditions as they crushed England's top order, leaving them at 26/3. Ben Duckett was the first to fall, dismissed for a duck by Matt Henry after facing just eight balls. Zak Crawley followed soon after, contributing 17 runs off 23 balls before being removed.

Joe Root's Early Exit

Root’s dismissal came in the 11th over, courtesy of a brilliant delivery by right-arm pacer Nathan Smith. It was only Smith’s second over of the day when he bowled a peach of a delivery that angled in and then shaped away off the pitch. Root, trying to defend on the back foot, got a thick edge, and Daryl Mitchell at first slip took a stunning one-handed catch, diving to his right. Root walked back for just 3 runs off 7 balls.

Nathan Smith Strikes Again Vs England

Smith didn’t stop with Root. In his very next over, he dismissed Jacob Bethell, further solidifying New Zealand’s strong start. At the time of writing, England have managed to recover somewhat, reaching 134/4 in 28 overs. Harry Brook and Ollie Pope are at the crease, trying to steady the innings and build a competitive total.
