Jake Fraser McGurk, Australia’s explosive opening batter, had an underwhelming outing in the first ODI against Sri Lanka as he was dismissed off just 2 runs by Asitha Fernando, McGurk stepped out of the creased but miscued a shot and played it straight into the hands of the bowler.

Australia and Sri Lanka competed in the first ODI of the 2-game series on February 12 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The host team batted first and put a solid 214 runs on the board.

Skipper Charith Asalanka slammed an inspiring century (127) to single-handedly push Sri Lanka to a decent total.

Meanwhile, in the second inning, Australia had a false start as Matthew Short was dismissed off a 2-ball duck by Asitha Fernando.

Fernando continued his momentum and delivered another crucial breakthrough in the 3rd over. Bowling a well-directed length delivery, Fernando forced Jake Fraser-McGurk into an awkward position as he walked into the shot too early.

The ball took a thick leading edge and lobbed back to the bowler, who reacted swiftly, diving forward to complete a smart catch.

Fraser-McGurk, struggling for rhythm, managed just 2 runs off 9 balls before departing. With both openers back in the pavilion, Fernando’s fiery spell put Sri Lanka in control, piling early pressure on the opposition batting lineup.

After McGurk’s dismissal, Australia lost two more important wickets of Steve Smith and Cooper Connolly in quick succession as the visitors were reduced to 31/4 inside the first batting powerplay.

Notably, Australia are coming off a successful Test series sweep victory against Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka’s dominance is different in white-ball formats and the same quality is testing Australia in the first ODI.
