Team India, under Ruturaj Gaikwad, clinched a historic Gold at the 2022 Asian Games final in Hangzhou. While their Gold Medal standoff against Afghanistan was washed out owing to ceaseless rains at the venue, the ‘Men in Blue’ were awarded the top honors owing to their higher seeding in the competition.

Following the no-result, captain Gaikwad led his troops to the top of the winner’s podium, where they embraced the momentous occasion with the national anthem.

Team India, fielding a relatively inexperienced side owing to the prevailing 2023 World Cup back home, trounced Nepal and Bangladesh with convincing margins to storm into the Asian Games final.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, punched above their weights to upset Sri Lanka and Pakistan in successive games, thus setting up a date with India for the Gold Medal. As it turned out, constant rains in Hangzhou restricted the grand finale to just 18.2 overs.

The no-result ensured a Gold Medal for the Indian team owing to their higher seeding in the competition. The ‘Men in Blue’ troops eventually made their way to the winner’s podium and collected their respective medals, where they were accompanied by silver-medalists Afghanistan and bronze-medalists Bangladesh.

As the strains of India’s national anthem resonated through the venue, Ruturaj Gaikwad and his fellow teammates found themselves overcome with emotion while being centre-staged at the platform.

Youngsters and IPL cult heroes like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma and Ravi Bishnoi emerged as some of the biggest standout performers for the Indian team throughout the multi-nation event in Hangzhou. Meanwhile, cricketers like Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Avesh Khan among others also stood up to the occasion at various critical junctures of the competition for Team India.

The win marked Indian men’s first-ever Gold Medal at the Asian Games T20 segment, and they accomplished the same merely a week after the ‘Women in Blue’ clinched their top honors at the women’s stage.
