Young pacer, Gus Atkinson made a sensational debut for England, picking up a stunning 4-20 in just 2.4 overs to guide the T20 world champions to a massive 95-run victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at Old Trafford.

ENG vs NZ: Gus Atkinson secured record figures on T20I debut

In a day where records tumbled, Atkinson etched his name in history by registering the best figures (4/20) for an English bowler in T20Is. In doing so, the 25-year-old pace prodigy outshone Jon Lewis's previous record of 4/24 set against Australia in 2005.

The peak of Atkinson's spell was the final three-wicket over which pulled the rug from beneath the Kiwis and bowled them out for 103 in pursuit of England's colossal 198-4.

While Atkinson's bowling made the headlines, England's batting was equally explosive. Jonny Bairstow's masterclass innings of an unbeaten 86 from 60 balls was perfectly complemented by Harry Brook's explosive 67 off 36 deliveries.

Brook's performance was particularly noteworthy, given the recent discussions around his surprising omission from England’s World Cup 2023 squad. The duo stitched a game-defining 131-run partnership off just 65 balls, setting New Zealand a challenging task.

In response, despite Tim Seifert's fighting 39, the visitors were left reeling, with only two of their batsmen managing to cross the ten-run mark.

Meanwhile, the synergy of Atkinson along with Adil Rashid's efficient 2-18, ensured the Kiwi challenge was short-lived.

With this victory, England has taken a 2-0 lead in the four-match T20 series, creating strong momentum ahead of the upcoming ODI series and the much-anticipated World Cup 2023 in India.

The teams will face off again on Sunday at Edgbaston as the series intensifies and New Zealand seeks a comeback.
