New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips once again proved his worth on the field by saving a certain boundary against South Africa in their recent World Cup 2023 faceoff in Pune. The cricketer, stationed at point during the South African innings upfront, dove to his right in a bid to hold onto a top-edge from in-form Proteas opener Quinton de Kock.

While he could not cling on to the ball, Phillips ended up saving three runs for his side, and his superman-like fielding effort earn much applause from the crowd and his teammates.

After New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to field first, his new-ball pacer Trent Boult dismissed South African captain Temba Bavuma within the powerplay to hand his side their first breakthrough of the match.

A few deliveries later, the ‘Black Caps’ almost packed Quinton de Kock as well when the left-hander top-edged one towards an outstretched Glenn Phillips stationed at point. Phillips flew to his right and ended up getting his fingertips on the ball instead, thus saving a certain boundary and keeping Quinton’s failed punch down to three runs.

On-air commentators lauded the Kiwi all-rounder for his fielding efforts, and claimed that other fielders would have struggled to even get their hands onto the ball in a similar scenario.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) also shared a short clip of Phillips’ fielding brilliance on Instagram, which instantly went viral across social media.

The match against South Africa marks a must-win one for New Zealand, as a defeat at this stage of the 2023 World Cup will further dent their semi-final chances.

The team, under Tom Latham, has already sustained two big defeats at the hands of India and Australia to slip out of the top of the points table.
