Getting hit in the box is every batter’s worst nightmare, and Jake Fraser-McGurk had the misfortune of living it during Match 5 of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25. Playing for the Melbourne Renegades against the Hobart Hurricanes, McGurk’s day went from bad to worse in just two deliveries.
Jake Fraser-McGurk Suffers Box Hit and Chops On in Back-to-Back Balls
It happened on the first ball of the second over. Billy Stanlake came steaming in and delivered a nasty back-of-a-length ball. It kicked up off the deck and angled in sharply. Jake Fraser-McGurk was beaten by the pace and missed it completely. The ball found the one place no batter wants it to: right in the box.
The impact of the blow was extremely painful. McGurk dropped to his knees as he sneered in pain, trying to shake it off. His frustration was evident as he was seen letting out a few expletives before pulling himself together to face the next delivery.
However, the young batter realized that the game could be extremely. On the very next ball, the lanky speedster bowled another back-of-a-length delivery, this time wide outside off. McGurk tried to cut it, but instead, he chopped it back onto his stumps. Just like that, he was walking back to the pavillion for a disappointing 5 off 5 balls.
It was a double blow, first the box, then the stumps. You couldn’t help but feel for the young batter, who had one of those moments he’ll want to forget in a hurry.
Renegades Blow Away Hurricanes
Despite McGurk’s dismissal, the Renegades went on to secure a rather comfortable victory. Chasing a meagre target of 75, they finished the game with six wickets to spare.
Tim Seifert led the chase with an unbeaten 37 off 19 balls as he smashed four boundaries and two sixes to get the job done in style.
