The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 got underway, with St Lucia Kings taking on Jamaica Tallawahs at Daren Sammy Stadium in the tournament opener. In a high-scoring thriller, the Tallawahs' captained Brandon King managed to defend 188 and win the encounter by 11 runs.

St Lucia Kings skipper Faf du Plessis, who is seen all over the globe playing franchise cricket, had a mixed day in the office for his side. Apart from failing with the bat, scoring nine off eight, du Plessis, regarded as one of the best fielders in world cricket, first dropped a dolly and then caught a skier.

Both events came off consecutive deliveries, much to the relief of du Plessis, with Brandon King going all guns blazing. Chris Sole bowling his final over, also the 18th of the Tallawahas' innings, dismissed King, who was batting on 81.

Du Plessis, stationed at long-on, dropped a sitter, being unable to settle down on the fifth ball and then took a diving catch to rectify his earlier mistake on the next ball.

The du Plessis-led club will face Barbados Royals on August 18, who are captained by West Indies T20I skipper Rovman Powell.
