The Barbados Royals Women and the Guyana Amazon Warriors Women were up against each other in the first match of the WCPL 2024. This match was being hosted by the Biran Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Guyana Amazon Warriors posted a moderate total on the board

The Royals won the toss in the match and put the Warriors to bat. The wicket looked a tad on the slowish side and hence the batters struggled to play their shots freely. The Warriors could managed 118/9 in their 20 overs, with Stafanie Taylor (38 off 36) playing a key role.

Hayley Matthews, Qiana Joseph and Amanda Jade-Wellington each picked up two wickets for the Royals. Aaliyah Alleyne was the pick up the bowlers for them with three for 21 in her four overs.

Georgia Redmayne fell early for the Royals

The Royals were looking for a solid start from their openers Hayley Matthews and Georgia Redmayne. However, that did not happed courtesy of a brilliant fielding effort by Erin Burns.

On the fifth delivery of the fifth over, Shabnim Ismail bowled a fullish delivery angling away from the batter from around the off stump. Redmayne slashed hard at the ball off her front foot and played it in the air towards the point region. The ball was travelling at a great speed and it apparently was going towards the boundary.

The Australian all-rounder, Erin Burns, who was fielding at point dived to her left and took a flying catch that stunned the batters and brought about ecstasy among her teammates. It was a stunning catch and the major credit for the wicket must be give to the fielder.

The effort by Burns reminded many of Yuvraj Singh, who was known for his efforts at the point region. In his prime Yuvraj has taken many such stunners to end the knocks of some of the greatest batters in world cricket at the time.

Coming back to the game, the Royals chased down the target of 119 runs losing nine wickets and with only one delivery remaining in the game. Hayley Matthews played a well composed knock of 61 from 58 deliveries, that ensured the Royals' win.
