India's newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has namedropped his all-time World XI he had played against during his playing years.

In an interview with Sportskeeda, Gambhir picked Australian duo Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden as the openers.

He further, picked all-format star AB de Villiers, and Test talismans Brain Lara and Inzamam-ul-Haq in the middle order.

Surprisingly, in the all-rounders' category, Gambhir ignored the likes of Shahid Afridi and opted for Abdul Razzaq. In the bowler's list, the Indian head coach went ahead with Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar, and Morne Morkel.

Gambhir's love for Morkel is evident, as the former India opener also pushed Morkel's name to BCCI for the bowling coach role, and as a result, the former South Africa seamer was roped in as India's bowling coach and will begin his stint with the upcoming Bangladesh series from September 19.

Gambhir’s World XI: Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, AB de Villiers, Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Andrew Symonds, Abdul Razzaq, Andrew Flintoff, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar, Morne Morkel.

Gambhir’s first home assignment

Gambhir's stint with Indian side started on a high, as he guided the Men in Blue to a comfortable T20I series win against Sri Lanka. However, things went downhill as India suffered a shocking defeat against the Island Nation in the ODIs.
