The three-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand went in the favour of the Kiwis and the action has now shifted to the 50-over format with the first game being played at the Basin Reserve, Wellington.
The home team won the toss and decided to bowl first and reduced Lankans to 23-4 in no time. Avishka Fernando was the only who displayed fight with 56 off just 63 balls while then likes of Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Asalanka all could not handle the might of the Kiwi bowling.
Sri Lanka Rocked By Disciplined BlackCaps
To make matter worse, Kamindu Mendis was run-out by Mitchell Santner with an absolute cracker of an effort. It was a good-length delivery on off, the final delivery of the ninth over. Kamindu Mendis defended it with soft hands towards off side and tried to steal a single.
However, Mitchell Santner at extra cover came charging in towards the ball and fired a one-handed under-arm throw to leave Kamindu short of his crease despite a desperate dive. The run out brought back memories of vintage Jonty Rhodes and Santner has once again shown why he is one of the best fielders in the world.
He is now the permanent white-ball captain of New Zealand and seems to be determined to give his all for his country. He will be playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL as well and is just growing in stature with each passing year.
After the wicket of Kamindu Mendis, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals and Kiwis have taken a strong position in the first ODI. The series is an important one for both the teams with Champions Trophy 2025 coming up, and it would be interesting to see how the Lankans go about their business after early hiccups.
