The Sydney Thunder have maintained their brilliant form in the tenth edition of the WBBL by winning an edge of the seat clash against the Melbourne Stars. The Thunder won the toss and put the Stars to bat.
The Stars struggled from the very beginning of their innings. The loss of Annable Sutherland early in the innings rocked the team and they struggled to recover from that. The Thunder kept chipping away with regular wickets and kept the Stars under pressure throughout the innings.
During the innings the, the star Sri Lankan all-rounder, Chamari Athapaththu effected a brilliant run out. It was the wicket of Tess Flintoff that the Sri Lankan skipper picked up with her brilliant fielding effort.
Chamari Athapaththu End Flintoff's Stay With A Rocket Throw
On the last delivery of the ninth over, Sharma dug out a yorker outside the off stump towards backward point and remained in her crease. Flintoff at the other end set off for a quick single, while Sharma was left ball watching. By the time Flintoff turned back and tried to return the crease it was too late as the 'Rocket Throw' of Chamari Athapaththu had taken off by then. The ball hit the stumps at the non-striker's end in the direct hit and ended Flintoff's stay in the middle. The fielding effort by the Sri Lankan all-rounder reminded fans of Ravindra Jadeja, who is known for his rocket throws from the backward point position.
By the end of the innings, the Stars stuttered along to reach a moderate total of 108/9. In the chase, Marizanne Kapp rocked the Thunder with three early wickets. However, Tahlia Wilson played a crucial knock and guiding the team towards the target . Anika Learoyd who scored 31 runs off 37 played a vital cameo in the lower order and ensured that the Thunder got home with four wickets in hand and two balls remaining in the game.
