Ben Stokes' deployment of the reverse-sweep against spinners has garnered significant attention in Test cricket circles over the past 4-5 years.

The English maestro's proficiency in this unorthodox shot has yielded mixed results, but on Monday, fortune favoured him as he executed a reverse sweep against one of his long-standing rivals, Nathan Lyon, for a boundary in the County Championship match between Lancashire and Durham.

This shot immediately drew comparisons to Stokes' iconic six off Lyon during his unbeaten 135 against Australia, a knock celebrated as one of the finest Test innings ever played, clinching a remarkable one-wicket victory with a record-breaking tenth-wicket partnership.

While the stroke itself mirrored the past, the outcome differed slightly – in 2019, the ball sailed over the boundary for six, whereas this time, it fell just short, resulting in a four.

Stokes and Lyon have engaged in numerous battles during the Ashes series over the years. In Durham's first innings, Lyon managed to outfox Stokes on the second day of the Vitality County Championship Division One encounter.

The England Test captain found it challenging to assert himself against Lancashire's disciplined bowling, accumulating just two runs from 16 deliveries before Lyon induced an outside edge, bringing an end to Stokes' innings.

This marked the tenth instance of the Australian spin wizard getting the better of the left-handed batter in red-ball cricket.

In Durham's second innings, Stokes contributed 18 runs off 30 balls before falling victim to Luke Wells.
