On Monday, December 23, Melbourne Renegades locked horns against Perth Scorchers at the Marvel Stadium in Docklands. It is a special stadium, as it has a roof facility and much to the fans' delight, it were on for the match.
The roof quickly hogged the internet after Connolly's shot hit the roof of the stadium. The incident occurred on the 5th ball of the 10th over when the Scorcher's batter hit Jhye Richardson for a big shot that went high up in the air and hit the roof, before hitting Richardson on his finger.
The incident got the fans on their feet as the umpire signalled for a dead ball and asked the bowler to bowl again.
Why Did the Umpire Signal A Dead Ball?
For those wondering why did the umpire not signal a six, then it is because of a recent rule change in the BBL. Earlier, cricket Australia had introduced a rule where the batting team was awarded a six if the ball even touched the roof, despite it just going high in the air and not getting the desired distance.
However, in 2023, a similar incident occurred twice in a single game that forced Cricket Australia to change the rule. Thus, according to the new rule, the ball will be signalled dead.
Talking about the ongoing match, Renegades are dominating the game as they have reduced the Scorchers to just 93/5 after 16 overs.
