In a twisting tale, Virat Kohli edged an outside delivery to second slip on the very first ball he faced on Day 1 of the Sydney Test against Australia. Before Steve Smith's catch was disallowed by the TV umpire, Kohli's wife, Anushka Sharma, appeared dejected in the stands.

Virat Kohli is fighting to retain his legacy in Test cricket as rumours over his potential exit after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been rife. His peer, Rohit Sharma, has already been dropped for the fifth Test against Australia.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli entered Sydney Cricket Ground to bat at no.4 in the first session of Day 1 of the fifth Test. He walked out with India being 17/2 as both openers walked back with disappointing scores. However, Kohli, for the very first ball of his innings, teased an outside off-stump delivery and edged it to second slip fielder Steve Smith.

Anushka Sharma in disbelief as Virat Kohli commits blunder

As the Australian team celebrated the crucial wicket, Kohli's wife, Anushka Sharma, watched the horror scenes from the stands of SCG. She looked completely dejected as she sank into the terrible feeling.

However, what could have been a golden duck dismissal turned into a lifeline for Kohli as Smith's low catch was disallowed by the umpire. The TV umpire felt that the ball had touched the ground and ruled it in the batter's favour.

From then, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill stitched a 40-run partnership before the latter lost his wicket to Nathan Lyon at the stroke of lunch.

Ricky Ponting debates over Smith's controversial catch

Meanwhile, the TV umpire's ruling on Steve Smith's catch sparked a debate amongst fans and analysts. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said on air during commentary that Smith's fingers were underneath the ball the whole time.

If this wasn't the case, the fielder wouldn't have been able to lift the ball back up. Ponting opined that the catch was fair and Kohli should have been given out. However, the third umpire's decision upheld his decision despite resentment from the Australian camp.
