England spinner Adil Rashid jolted New Zealand’s well-set opening pair straightaway with a ‘Jaffa’ in the first ODI of their four-match series. The seasoned campaigner was employed into action by skipper Jos Buttler in the 11th over of the New Zealand innings.

Will Young, who was well-set at the crease by the time, was completely deceived by Rashid off the first ball of the latter’s spell.

Adil Rashid made instant impact upon introduction in New Zealand’s high-octane run-chase in the first ODI of their four-match series. The 35-year-old spinner uprooted Will Young’s off-stump with a sharp turn to bring his side back into the contest.

Rashid’s breakthrough also gifted him his 100th ODI wicket in England and Wales. Overall, the cricketer has snared 184 victims across 125 appearances for his country.

Earlier in the game, England amassed 291-6 from their 50 overs off the back of half-centuries from Liam Livingstone, opener Dawid Malan, captain Jos Buttler and comeback man Ben Stokes.

New Zealand, in response, raced to 50 within nine overs with both openers intact at the crease. Young’s dismissal at 29 became the visitors’ first casualty at 61, thus paving way for his partner Devon Conway to form another 50-plus stand with number three Henry Nicholls.

The ongoing series marks the final set of preparations for both sides ahead of the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India. Remarkably, the two teams will also launch the tournament with a game against each other on October 5 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
