Till Thursday (September 14), Pakistan's opening batsman Abdullah Shafique had no memorable ODI performances, having scored a total of 28 runs over three innings. The 23-year-old did, however, make the most of his opportunity during Pakistan's crucial Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

With the help of three fours and two delightful sixes, Shafique showed composure against the Sri Lankan attack until notching his maiden ODI half-century. But just as it looked like he would keep going on to make a three-digit score, Matheesha Pathirana came back to claim the prized wicket.

Shafique's standout shot during his 69-ball stint was against Dhananjaya de Silva. By using his feet expertly, it happened during the 21st over of Pakistan's innings. It was a tossed-up delivery, and Shafique went down the track to loft it over the long-on.

Shafique's timing was so precise that the ball traveled 91 meters straight down the ground, which made matters worse for Dhananjaya.

Shafique got to his maiden half-century in the ODIs on the following delivery, but fell to Pathirana soon after, in the next over.

At the time of writing, Pakistan are 128/4 after 27 overs, with Mohammad Rizwan batting on 22* and Mohammad Nawaz batting on 10*.
