This came after a controversial incident with Australian cricketer Sam Konstas on the opening day of the match. The incident with Sam Konstas occurred when the two players collided while switching ends after the 10th over of Australia's innings. A few words were exchanged, but the situation was diffused by the intervention of the umpire and Usman Khawaja. 

The International Cricket Council (ICC) didn’t let the matter slide, fining Kohli 20% of his match fees and giving him a demerit point for the physical contact, as cricket is a non-contact sport. Despite the incident, Kohli continued to show resilience and sportsmanship.

On Day 2 of the match, Kohli made a special gesture towards Steve Smith, the Australian batter. After Smith scored his 34th Test century, Kohli walked up to him and patted him on the back. This act of kindness was significant, especially after Kohli had been booed by the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) crowd.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith continued to shine in the Test. He scored a brilliant 34th Test century, reaching 139 off 194 balls by the end of the second day. 

With the help of Smith’s century and contributions from other players like Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne, Australia posted a strong total of 474.  Australia’s batting display left India with much to do, especially after Pat Cummins added 49 runs and Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland chipped in with important contributions.
