In a rather unfortunate turn of events at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium, Indian batter, Virat Kohli recorded his first-ever duck in World Cup (ODI & T20I) history across 56 innings.

IND vs ENG: Kohli bags first ever duck in 56 World Cup innings

The setback came during Match 29 of World Cup 2023 contest against England, where English seamer David Willey outplayed the former Indian skipper.

Kohli's innings commenced under challenging circumstances. Coming in at the end of the fourth over, after the early departure of Shubman Gill for 9, courtesy of Chris Woakes, Kohli was clearly under pressure.

Willey's precision with the ball ensured Kohli couldn't get off the mark, even after facing eight deliveries. An attempt to break free from this pressure saw Kohli trying to loft the ball over mid-off, only to be caught by Ben Stokes. This brought an abrupt end to his innings, denying him the opportunity to equal the record for the 49th ODI century.

Willey, who also plays alongside Kohli for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, couldn't hide his excitement after dismissing him. The celebration on the field made it evident how crucial the wicket was for the England team.

Meanwhile, the day began with England's skipper, Jos Buttler, winning the toss and electing to bowl first.

This was a noteworthy decision as it marked the first time in this edition of the World Cup that India was put into bat first.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, however, expressed that they would have opted to bat even if they had won the toss. Rohit, known for his explosive starts, delivered once again, giving India a decent start after Willey's maiden first over.

At the time of writing this article, India is 81/3 after 22 overs with Rohit and KL Rahul in the middle as the duo looks to stabilise the Indian innings after three early jolts.
