Virat Kohli was supposed to light up the ODI series against Australia, but the legendary Indian batter failed to deliver the goods in the first two ODIs and registered back-to-back ducks as his retirement talks intensified. In the first match, Mitch Starc got the better of him, and Xavier Bartlett had the last laugh in Adelaide as Kohli failed to open his account.
Interestingly, despite not scoring a single run in the ODI series so far, his average remains well over 57. Before the second ODI, Kohli’s average was 57.64, but it went down to 57.41. Kohli's numbers are still superior as compared to his peers, but the question arises, does anyone have a better average than him in ODIs?.
Kohli ODI average: Only one player has better numbers than the King
Kohli’s average is mind-boggling, considering the fact that he has played 304 ODI games and has been a consistent performer for almost 16 years in this format. However, there is only one player in the game’s history who has a better average than him.
If we take the minimum criteria of 20 ODI innings, then only one man has better numbers, and he is Ryan ten Doeschate. The current India assistant coach and former Netherlands star has played 33 ODIs and averages an astonishing 67.00.
Players with the highest ODI averages
| Player | Nation | Average |
| Ryan ten Doeschate | Netherlands | 67.00 |
| Virat Kohli | India | 57.41 |
| Shubman Gill | India | 57.02 |
| Dawid Malan | England | 55.76 |
| Babar Azam | Pakistan | 54.23 |
(Minimum 20 innings)
Dutch legend, Ten Doeschate, stands tall with astonishing numbers of 67.00, and he is followed by Kohli, whose numbers have dipped, but they still remain strong. Kohli is followed by current India ODI skipper, Gill, with an average of 57.02, while Dawid Malan of England, and Pakistan’s Babar Azam occupy the fourth and fifth spots.
