Virat Kohli punched out his century number 54 through the course of his calculated knock against New Zealand in the series-deciding third ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Chasing 338 for a win, the legendary Indian batter steadied his team’s sinking ship after an unmitigated top-order collapse.
The innings also marked Virat Kohli’s 85th century in international cricket, and his tenth against New Zealand across all formats of the game, eclipsing the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis and his modern-day rival Joe Root.
Virat Kohli races past Tendulkar and Joe Root for huge record
Virat Kohli packed an electrifying century against New Zealand in the third ODI of the three-match series at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, January 18. The Indian run machine raced to his 100 from just 91 balls in the 41st over of the run-chase, i.e., shortly after completing a counterattacking 50-run partnership with hard-hitting Harshit Rana for the seventh wicket.
Celebrating his century number 85 in international cricket, the innings also marked Virat Kohli’s tenth score of 100 or more against New Zealand across all formats. It is worth noting that the former Indian captain has punched out three Test hundreds against New Zealand, and another seven in ODI matches. Across all formats, Virat Kohli holds a staggering batting average of 47.66 in games involving New Zealand. His ODI average against New Zealand itself reads an astonishing 58.65 after 36 innings.
Nonetheless, the 37-year-old has now gone past the likes of Jacques Kallis, his former teammate Sachin Tendulkar and legendary English batter Joe Root to record the highest number of centuries against New Zealand in international cricket. Here is a look at five players with most international hundreds against New Zealand across all formats.
Most international centuries vs New Zealand
- Virat Kohli – 10 in 73 innings
- Joe Root – 9 in 71 innings
- Jacques Kallis – 9 in 76 innings
- Sachin Tendulkar – 9 in 80 innings
- Rahul Dravid – 8 in 59 innings
Virat Kohli charts second 50-plus score of the series, continues golden run
Just a week ago, Virat Kohli also scored a sizzling 93-run knock from just 91 balls to help India pull off a remarkable 301-run chase against New Zealand. His innings helped Team India go 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series, before Daryl Mitchell’s century in the second ODI enforced a decider.
The legendary Indian batter also unleashed 302 runs in last month’s three-match ODI series against South Africa at home, which included successive hundreds in Ranchi and Raipur. In the series-decider in Vizag on December 6, the cricketer charted a decisive 65* from just 45 balls as India clinched the series 2-1.
After recording two ducks in a row in Perth and Adelaide last October, Virat Kohli punched out a fighting 74* in the third ODI at the SCG against Australia to help India avoid an away whitewash. His latest innings against New Zealand marks Kohli’s sixth score of 50 or more in his last seven ODI innings.
