Babar Azam is reportedly feeling disrespected by Steve Smith’s decision of denying him a single in BBL 2025-26. Vaibhav Suryavanshi unleashed yet another Youth ODI record, this time during the 2026 ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup. In other news, the KSCA has reportedly received a green signal for hosting RCB’s IPL 2026 fixtures.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, January 17.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi attains huge U19 record for India in World Cup 2026

Indian opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi clubbed 72 runs off 67 balls with six boundaries and three sixes against Bangladesh Under-19 in Bulawayo in match number seven of the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup. Opening the innings, Suryavanshi’s counterattacking knock set up path of a competitive 238-run total for India.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi also became only the seventh Indian cricketer in history to complete 1,000 runs in Youth ODI matches, joining the likes of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan and others. Furthermore, the teenage batting sensation became the youngest batter in Under-19 World Cup history to slap a fifty-plus score.

Ajinkya Rahane pulls out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign

Out-of-favour Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has pulled out of the Mumbai team for the remainder of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. The legendary Indian batter has reportedly cited personal reasons behind his decision. After the conclusion of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Mumbai cricket team is scheduled to play just two more matches to conclude their Ranji Trophy league stage run.

The Mumbai team will be facing Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad between January 22 and January 25 next week. They will subsequently cross paths with Delhi in Mumbai between January 29 and February 1.

RCB to play home IPL 2026 games at Chinnaswamy Stadium

The iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will reportedly be hosting the home fixtures of the RCB franchise in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. In a significant development, the Karnataka government has given the green signal to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for hosting international and IPL matches going forward.

The venue was all set to be blacklisted after the tragic stampede incident that took place last year, which cost the lives of 11 civilians, all who were part of RCB’s IPL 2025 winning parade outside the venue.

Babar Azam feels disrespected by Steve Smith, creates dressing room ruckus

Pakistan star Babar Azam is reportedly unhappy with Sydney Sixers teammate Steve Smith after the latter denied him a single at the end of the over during their recent BBL 2025-26 match against Sydney Thunder at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). According to reports, Babar is openly criticising Smith’s decision of retaining the strike, and the cricketer is planning to raise the matter with the Sydney Sixers management and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

BCB requests ICC to swap Bangladesh with Ireland

In a new development as reported by Cricbuzz, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has now suggested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to swap the Bangladesh team with Ireland in Group B of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It is worth noting that the Bangladesh government is refusing to send the Bangladesh team to India for the tournament citing security concerns.

Shifting Bangladesh to Group B would mean that all their group matches will then be hosted by Sri Lankan venues.
