Virat Kohli continues to pounce on new records with each outing, as he recently attained yet another remarkable batting feat during India’s World Cup 2023 standoff against Bangladesh. The batting veteran punched out a counterattacking run-chase assault after the dismissals of both Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

When Kohli reached 35* in his innings, he went past Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene for an all-time batting record, and inched closer to the likes of Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Virat Kohli jumps past Jayawardene for this record

Earlier this year, Virat Kohli became the fastest batter in the world to complete 25,000 runs across all international formats. Through his recent World Cup 2023 appearance against Bangladesh in Pune, the cricketer has now gone past the overall run-tally of former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.

When he reached 35* in his innings, Kohli registered his 25,958th run to move above Jayawardene’s 25,957-run collection to become international cricket’s fourth most prolific batter of all time. The batting maverick is also inching towards the 26,000-run mark to become only the fourth batter in history to reach the landmark figure.

Virat Kohli’s current international run-tally only places him below all-time bating greats Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting in the celebrated list. Here is a look at the revised top five list of batters with most runs in international cricket:

Top five batters with most runs in international cricket

Batters
Runs
Sachin Tendulkar34,357
Kumar Sangakkara28,016
Ricky Ponting27,483
Virat Kohli25,979*
Mahela Jayawardene25,957

Virat Kohli is also nearing Sachin Tendulkar’s century record in ODIs, as his 47 tons places him just below the former cricketer’s tally of 49 hundreds.

With fitness and age on Kohli’s side, the modern-day icon might well achieve the same and beyond in the coming months.
