The Mitchell Starc juggernaut was all over England in the first hour on Day 1 of the much-anticipated Ashes 2025/26 series, as England won the toss and decided to bat first on Friday morning.

As the teams took the field for the national anthems after a long build-up to the series, the crowd at the Optus Stadium, Perth, did not disappoint, turning up in huge numbers to start the exciting five-match series.

Record attendance in Perth for Ashes Day 1

The turnout of 43,591 people on Day 1 of the Ashes 2025/26 marked the highest-ever single day attendance at the Perth Stadium in a Test match.

So far, the venue has hosted 11 Tests since cricket in Perth moved from the W.A.C.A to the Optus Stadium during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2018/19. However, it is the first time that England is visiting this stadium for an Ashes Test.

How did the first session of the Ashes Test in Perth pan out?

As he has so often done, it was the Aussie left-hand bowler, Mitchell Starc, who wreaked havoc to get the series going, with his first over wicket of Zak Crawley, who fell for a six ball duck.

Starc backed it up by trapping Ben Duckett plumb in front of the wickets for 21(20), before squaring up England's leading Test run-scorer Joe Root for a seven ball duck, after inducing an edge.

Ollie Pope and Harry Brook tried to build a partnership before the latter got LBW against Cameron Green at 46(58). After 23 overs, England are 105/4, as captain Ben Stokes and vice-captain Brook try to rebuild the innings.
