Ruturaj Gaikwad’s long-awaited return to India’s ODI team did not go as planned, and fans on social media quickly expressed their disappointment after the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain was dismissed for just eight runs in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi.

Gaikwad earned his recall following Shreyas Iyer’s injury. But his comeback innings was cut short by a stunning moment of brilliance from South African youngster Dewald Brevis, who took a flying one-handed catch at backward point. While trying to cut a ball slightly outside off-stump from Ottneil Baartman, he sliced it in the air, only for Brevis to leap sideways and pull off a sensational catch.

The effort immediately brought back memories of legendary fielder Jonty Rhodes, and Brevis’ athletic grab went viral online within minutes. 

The dismissal came at a time when India were building momentum after a big century partnership between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. But once Rohit fell, Gaikwad struggled to settle. While Brevis received praise, Gaikwad faced a wave of criticism on Twitter.
