Tamil Nadu mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy continued his comeback trail for the India cap with a magnificent five-wicket haul in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, India's premier domestic List A competition.

The 32-year-old, who last turned out for India during the men's 2021 T20 World Cup in the Middle East, unleashed his incisive spell against an inexperienced Nagaland side and finished with spectacular figures of 5 for 9 in Tamil Nadu's Group E fixture.

Capable of turning the ball both ways, Chakravarthy proved a challenge too stiff for Nagaland batters. They were bundled for a horrendous 69 all out at the historic Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Tamil Nadu's key match-winner underlined his quality with a terrific burst and played a handsome role in his team's ten-wicket victory.

Chakravarthy ran through the opposition batting line-up in a brutal spell that gave Nagaland batters no respite and sustained the wicket-taking threat. The accidental cricketer, who turned to cricket only after trying his hands at architecture and bloomed late, elevated his Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023-24 tally to 14 scalps in just six matches.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner has been making the waves domestically after facing a disappointing axe from India's T20I set-up with question marks raised on his long-term viability and fitness standards during the 2021-22 season.

Despite his India snub, however, Chakravarthy has remained integral to the KKR set-up from his debut season for the franchise back in 2019. Since then, the mystery tweaker has taken 62 wickets in his 56 outings in the IPL while going for 7.45 runs an over.

Notably, the bowler has also taken 36 List A wickets in just 15 matches at an average of 14.19 along with 77 scalps in his overall T20 career with an economy rate of 7.19.
