In a landmark moment during New Zealand’s third World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh on Friday, Trent Boult stormed into the record books by becoming the third fastest bowler to claim 200 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Boult achieved this significant feat in his 107th match, outpacing fellow countryman Kyle Mills, who previously held the New Zealand record by reaching the milestone in 135 matches in 2012.

It all happened in the 38th over when Chennai’s crowd bore witness as Boult, with his deceptive knuckleball, dismissed Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy, cementing his place in ODI history. Starting the game on a high, Boult delivered a significant blow to Bangladesh by claiming the wicket of the in-form Litton Das on the very first ball.

The list for the fastest to 200 ODI wickets is headlined by Mitchell Starc (102 matches), followed by Saqlain Mushtaq (104 matches), with Boult comfortably sitting at third.

Despite a lukewarm start to this World Cup campaign, with a lone wicket against England and a dry spell against the Netherlands, Boult’s recent performance has revitalized New Zealand's bowling attack. This is reminiscent of his vital role in World Cup 2019, where he consistently rattled opposition top-orders, bagging 17 wickets in 11 matches.

Meanwhile, he lead-up to the World Cup 2023 saw Boult making headlines for a different reason. Last year, he made the significant decision to forgo his central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) in order to spend more quality time with his family and to address his growing weariness from constant overseas tours.

His choice to participate in this World Cup, despite the absence of a central contract, further highlights his dedication to New Zealand cricket.
