Tilak Varma threats Breetzke [Source: Screengrabs]
In the ongoing IND vs SA 3rd ODI, Tilak Varma, who was only bowling his second over of the day, gave a Mankad threat to batter Matthew Breetzke, who was being too jumpy as per Tilak, before he could deliver a bowl.
Breetzke has been a menace for India with his comical actions on the field, which also saw Virat Kohli mimicking him.
The Proteas aggressor has been in good form too with the bat, however, his nervy action during South Africa's innings forced Tilak Varma to send in a friendly warning sign.
What happened between Tilak and Breetzke?
On the third ball of the 24th over, Varma, just as he entered his delivery stride, suddenly bailed out and turned towards the non-striker's end. Matthew Breetzke, who had wandered a little too far from his crease in anticipation, was caught short as Tilak calmly pretended to remove the bails.
The Mankad attempt was a close one, as Breetzke managed to get back inside quickly, which was later quenched by Tilak's hearty smile as he laughed off the attempt.
Tilak's attempt out of desperation?
It was a clever, psychological tactic rather than a serious dismissal attempt, maybe a friendly but firm warning delivered with a smile. After a brief word with the batter, Tilak returned to his mark and finished his over while conceding 14 runs from his 2 overs.
Nevertheless, the cheeky attempt to Mankad Breetzke was indeed a call of desperation from Tilak's side, as India is struggling to put a dent in Quinton De Kock's heroic stand. The wicketkeeper-batter is piling up runs and has neared his ton at the time of writing as Breetzke partners him.
After Bavuma's dismissal, India did some pseudo damage, which has been healed by de Kock as of now, as the Proteas stand at 167/2 at the end of 28 overs.
