In the customary New Year Test in Sydney, Australia and Pakistan will square off against each other in the third and final match of the Benaud-Qadir Trophy, which will begin on Wednesday (January 3).

As Hosts, Australia have already gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series, having won both Perth and Melbourne encounters, respectively with relative ease. With a win, defending champions Australia could move to the second spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-24 cycle, while Pakistan with a win could edge past Bangladesh in the points table.

Both teams have already announced their playing XIs for the Sydney Test, with Australia playing an unchanged XI from the Boxing Day match, wherein Pakistan have opted to rejig their side, and rope in debutant Saim Ayub and spinner Sajid Khan into the eleven.

With so much at stake for both sides, let's see how the pitch at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney will behave throughout the contest.

Sydney Cricket Ground Pitch Report

The track at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground generally offers both batters and bowlers equal assistance. While batting is easy on the first few days, the pitch showcases wear and tear as the Test progresses and starts to assist spinners.

However, with cloudy conditions predicted on most days including Day 1 of the Test, fast bowlers will find assistance in the air, giving the batters a run for their money while neglecting the supportive bat-friendly track.

In case of the clouds moving away and the sun beating down, the SCG becomes an ideal Asian pitch, where run-scoring starts effortless and then becomes quite grinding-affair with the slowness of the pitch coming into effect.
