The Australian cricket team is set to face Pakistan in the third Test of their three-match series between January 3 and January 7. The match also marks the 16th edition of Australia’s annual Pink Test.

The first Test match of the year in Australia is termed the ‘Pink Test’ owing to its significance with the McGrath Foundation.

What is the Pink Test in Australia?

The New Year Tests in Australia are described as ‘Pink Test’ matches, and they are hosted by the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The first of them was played back in January 2009, with hosts Australia taking on the visiting South Africans. Notably, the stands and signs around the venue, and even the jerseys of Australia’s Test team are coloured in pink on the occasion.

The motive behind the Pink Test is to raise awareness about breast cancer. Former Australian fast bowler and all-time great Glenn McGrath had lost his wife Jane to the disease back in 2008. The cricketer launched the McGrath Foundation in 2005 after his wife was diagnosed with the same, and the foundation soon partnered up with Cricket Australia for raising awareness and collect funds for patients and survivors.

To date, the Pink Test has helped the McGrath Foundation raise more than USD 22 million dollars for the cause.

What is Australia’s record in Pink Test matches?

Australia has so far won eight of their 15 Pink Test matches, with six of them ending in drawn results. Their only defeat occurred back in January 2011 against England during the final match of the 2010-11 Ashes.
