India endured a deeply disappointing outing in Mullanpur on Thursday as South Africa secured a commanding 51-run win in the second T20I. The defeat carried unusual weight for the visitors, as India had maintained an excellent record under Suryakumar Yadav’s full-time leadership since the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Surya's tenure had brought a sequence of successful series, starting from the assignment in Sri Lanka and extending through wins such as the Asia Cup. The loss in New Chandigarh, therefore, stood out as a rare setback during an otherwise dominant phase.

Notably, South Africa, guided by Aiden Markram, levelled the five-match series 1–1 with a clinical all-round display. While chasing a target of 214, India collapsed almost immediately. Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav all departed inside four overs, leaving the innings in disarray and diminishing any realistic chance of staging a fightback.

Biggest defeat for India in T20Is (By runs)

  • 80 Runs vs New Zealand, Wellington, 2019
  • 51 Runs vs South Africa, New Chandigarh, 2025*
  • 49 Runs vs Australia, Bridgetown, 2010
  • 49 Runs vs South Africa, Indore, 2022
  • 47 Runs vs New Zealand, Nagpur, 2016

The margin of defeat created an unwanted chapter in India’s T20I history. The 51-run loss now stands as the team’s second-heaviest defeat in the format in terms of runs. The largest remains the 80-run setback against New Zealand in 2019.

Most single-digit dismissals for India in T20Is in a calendar year

9 – Shubman Gill (2023)

9 – Dinesh Karthik (2022)

8 – Rishabh Pant (2019)

8 – Suryakumar Yadav (2025)*

8 – Suryakumar Yadav (2024)

The match also delivered a difficult personal milestone for Suryakumar Yadav. His dismissal added to an increasing tally of single-digit scores recorded in a calendar year for India in T20Is. Notably, the list features names like Shubman Gill with nine single-digit dismissals in 2023 and Dinesh Karthik with the same number in 2022.

Longest over by an Indian bowler in T20Is

Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh experienced one of the most challenging overs of his international career during the match. His spell produced a 13-ball over that conceded 18 runs and featured seven wides.

The sequence created the longest over ever delivered by an Indian in T20Is. It also equalled the record for the longest over by a bowler from a Full-Member nation, matching Naveen-ul-Haq’s 13-ball effort against Zimbabwe last year.

  • Arshdeep Singh - 13 balls (18 runs) vs South Africa, New Chandigarh 2025
  • Khaleel Ahmed - 11 balls (11 runs) vs Sri Lanka, Pallekele 2024
  • Hardik Pandya - 11 balls (19 runs) vs Australia, Adelaide 2016
  • Arshdeep Singh - 10 balls (13 runs) vs Ireland, New York 2024
  • Arshdeep Singh - 10 balls (6 runs) vs West Indies, Tarouba 2023

The left-arm pacer’s over joined an uncomfortable list of extended overs by Indian bowlers in the format. Arshdeep himself had previously delivered a 10-ball over during the 2024 T20 World Cup against Ireland, which already stood as the longest over by an Indian in the tournament.
