The Sri Lankan openers ensured a scintillating start for the team in the 14th World Cup match against Australia at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, Lucknow, on Monday, October 15.

Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, the Sri Lankan pair, forged a 125-run partnership for the opening wicket, marking the highest opening stand Sri Lanka has ever seen against Australia in the history of the ODI World Cup

Nissanka and Perera left no room for doubt about their captain Kusal Mendis’ decision to bowl first, mounting an offensive batting display against the Australian bowlers right from the start, unrelentingly piling on the pressure as the match progressed.

The partnership came to an end in the 21.4th over, thanks to a short delivery bowled by Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, targeting the off-side. Nissanka, while going for the pull shot, mistimed it, and the ball ended up in the safe hands of David Warner.

Pathum Nissanka notched up 61 runs from 67 balls, braced with eight boundaries. At the time of this update, Kusal Perera and captain Kusal Mendis remain resolute against the Australian bowling challenge.

It's worth mentioning that Sri Lanka and Australia, both coming off two consecutive losses, find themselves in a must-win situation as the competition will only intensify from here on and they will be eager to notch their first win of the tournament.
