New Zealand have welcomed back two key players, Kane Williamson and Nathan Smith, for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England. The series will begin at Bay Oval on October 26.
After missing the T20I series due to a minor medical issue, Williamson, 35, is set to return to action at his home ground in Christchurch.
The star batter has also been busy as Lucknow Super Giants’ strategic advisor in the IPL and had opted out of earlier tours to play county cricket and the Hundred.
New Zealand name a strong lineup for England series
Kane Williamson last played for New Zealand during the Champions Trophy final in Dubai earlier this year. Alongside Williamson, 27-year-old all-rounder Nathan Smith is back after a long rehab for an abdominal injury sustained in the first Test against Zimbabwe in August. Smith hasn’t played competitive cricket since but declared himself fully fit and ready for New Zealand’s busy summer.
The squad also sees the return of Mitchell Santner, who will lead the ODI side following his recovery from an abdominal injury and participation in the T20I series against England. Tom Latham, the wicketkeeper, is back after a shoulder injury sidelined him during New Zealand’s Test series in Zimbabwe.
Despite these comebacks, New Zealand faces injury concerns with Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, and Ben Sears unavailable.
To fill the void, Canterbury seam-bowling all-rounder Zak Foulkes has been included, alongside seasoned players Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, and Will Young.
New Zealand’s ODI squad will assemble in Tauranga ahead of October 26’s opener. The second ODI is scheduled in Hamilton on October 29, with the series concluding in Wellington on November 1.
