History was created in Sharjah as UAE captain Muhammad Waseem smashed his way past Indian superstar Rohit Sharma’s record for most sixes as a T20I captain. Waseem achieved the feat during his team’s tri-nation clash against Afghanistan, where he played a fiery knock of 67 runs off just 37 balls.

The tri-nation series is being played between the UAE, Afghanistan and Pakistan as preparation drills ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup. But for Waseem, it turned out to be a historic event.

Muhammad Waseem Becomes T20I Sixes King As Captain

UAE’s explosive opener Muhammad Waseem hammered six huge sixes and four boundaries in the recent clash against Afghanistan, showing his trademark power-hitting.

The moment came in the third over when Waseem launched Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman for back-to-back sixes, taking him past Indian legend Rohit Sharma’s tally of 105 sixes as captain. Remarkably, Waseem reached the milestone in just 54 innings, while Rohit needed 62 to set his record.

Waseem’s batting fireworks also lifted him in the all-time six-hitters chart in T20Is, where he now sits in second place. He moved past New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (173 sixes), and only Rohit Sharma is ahead with a massive 205 sixes.

Despite Waseem’s heroics, the UAE could not chase down Afghanistan’s strong total of 188/4. Waseem’s 67 gave his side hope, but wickets kept falling, and they were restricted to 150/8, losing the match by 38 runs.

Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran (63 off 40) and Sediqullah Atal (54 off 30) set up the win with a brilliant batting display.

With this victory, Afghanistan climbed to second place in the points table, behind leaders Pakistan, while the UAE are still searching for their first win.
