India are in a strong position at Edgbaston after dominating most of the sessions in the Test match. Shubman Gill led from the front with the bat, while with the ball, the duo of Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep have delivered.

Siraj And Akash Deep Step Up In Absence Of Jasprit Bumrah

They picked all 10 wickets in the first innings with Mohammed Siraj bagging six and Akash Deep grabbing four. Now, in the second innings, the initial five wickets have also been taken by the duo, with Akash Deep taking four of them. It is great news for India that the pace duo has stepped up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, and it was exactly what the team needed after losing the opening Test.

In total, they have taken 15 wickets between them, which is the highest in a Test by Indian opening bowlers in England. They have broken India's previous record of 14 wickets, which their opening bowlers achieved in the 2021 Trent Bridge Test.

The Indian opening bowling pair has taken 12 wickets at Lord's twice, once in 1996 and again in 2011. Thus, Siraj and Akash Deep have reached a level that no other Indian opening bowling pair has reached.

Most Wickets In A Test By Indian Opening Bowlers In England:

  • 15*, Birmingham, 2025,
  • 14, Nottingham, 2021
  • 12, Lord’s 1996
  • 12, Lord’s, 2011
  • 12, Nottingham, 2011

However, with respect to the game, the job is still unfinished and India need both Siraj and Akash Deep to pick more wickets. At the time of writing, India still need five wickets to win the game, and England are fighting hard to salvage a draw.

The other bowlers also need to step up, especially Prasidh Krishna, who has not only gone wicketless but has also leaked runs.
