Shubman Gill Shatters Multiple Records During Second Test [Source: AP Photos]
After Indian skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, all eyes turned toward the young and stylish Shubman Gill, who was handed the captaincy reins. However, the start of Gill’s leadership journey wasn’t smooth. Many critics questioned his form, especially in overseas conditions like SENA countries.
But as the Test series against England began, Gill responded in the best way possible, with the bat.
In the first Test of the series at Headingley, Gill made a powerful statement. The new skipper roared back into form and silenced his critics by scoring a brilliant 147 in the first innings. With that knock, he became only the fifth Indian to score a century on Test captaincy debut, joining legendary names such as Vijay Hazar and Sunil Gavaskar.
Shubman Gill Smashes Double Ton at Edgbaston
If anyone thought the first match was a fluke, Gill quickly proved them wrong. In the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, he elevated his game even further. Resuming Day 2 on an unbeaten 114, the young captain continued his onslaught, eventually reaching his maiden double century in Test cricket.
While the runs kept flowing, so did the records. During the second innings of the same Test, Gill added yet another feather to his cap by breaking the record of most runs scored by an Indian captain in a debut Test series, a record previously held by his idol, Virat Kohli.
Most Runs In Debut Series As India Test Captain

Shubman Gill Joins Elite Club
Notably, Gill’s performance has also placed him among an elite club of players who have scored 300 or more runs in a single Test match in England. He became the 13th player to achieve this in English soil. The last visiting player to do so was South Africa's Hashim Amla.
As of now, India are in a commanding position, boasting a lead of 416 runs. Gill, already with a half-century in the second innings, is showing no signs of slowing down. Alongside Rishabh Pant, the team’s vice-captain, the leadership duo is guiding India toward what looks like a remarkable Test victory.
