Rohit Sharma’s time as India ODI captain has officially come to an end. After leading the team across all formats until the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit has now been replaced by Shubman Gill as the new One Day International (ODI) captain. India will soon head to Australia for a white-ball series consisting of eight matches, three ODIs and five T20Is. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket, with the 26-year-old Gill taking charge of the ODI side.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two biggest stars of Indian cricket in this generation, are still part of the squad. However, the selectors made the move to promote Shubman Gill with a long-term vision.

By the time the next ODI World Cup takes place in 2027 in South Africa, Rohit will be 40 years old. The selectors believe this is the right time for Gill to take over and gain experience as a leader. With Shubman Gill now at the helm, the natural question is how many ODIs he will lead before the 2027 World Cup.

As per India’s current schedule, the team is set to play around 24 ODIs between now and the start of that tournament. This count begins with the three ODIs on the upcoming Australia tour. After that, India will host South Africa and New Zealand for two separate series, each featuring three ODIs.

India's ODI schedule ahead of ODI World Cup 2027:

  • October-November 2025 - vs Australia - 3 ODIs (Away)
  • November-December 2025 - vs South Africa -  3 ODIs (Home)
  • January 2026 - vs New Zealand - 3 ODIs (Home)
  • June 2026 - vs Afghanistan - 3 ODIs (Home)
  • July 2026 - vs England - 3 ODIs (Away)
  • September-October 2026 - vs West Indies - 3 ODIs (Home)
  • October-November 2026 - vs New Zealand - 3 ODIs (Away)
  • December 2026 - vs Sri Lanka - 3 ODIs (Home)

According to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Future Tours Programme for 2023 to 2027, India are scheduled to play 38 Tests, 42 ODIs, and 61 T20Is during this period. Apart from regular bilateral series, India will also co-host the 2026 T20 World Cup alongside Sri Lanka. The team will have several overseas tours, including visits to England, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, as part of their packed calendar.
