Shubman Gill has officially been named India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The announcement was made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad on October 4, when India’s ODI and T20I squads for the tour were revealed.
Notably, this marks Gill’s very first time leading the ODI side, although he has already experienced captaincy duties in both Test and T20I formats earlier this year. The decision also seems to be part of a long-term plan, with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
India will play three ODIs in Australia between October 19 and 25, followed by five T20Is from October 29 to November 8. The series will serve as a big test for Gill, not only as a batter but also as a leader in a format where he has never captained India before.
Shubman Gill's captaincy record so far
Gill’s captaincy journey so far has been brief but eventful. Earlier this year, he was handed the responsibility of leading India in Tests. His first assignment was a challenging series against England, which ended in a 2–2 draw.
Soon after, he guided India to a convincing victory over the West Indies, winning by an innings and 140 runs. He has also captained India in T20Is, giving him a total of 11 international matches as captain across formats, out of which he has won eight and lost three.
As a player, Gill has already cemented his place as one of India’s most reliable ODI batters. In 55 one-day internationals, he has scored 2,775 runs at an average of more than 52, maintaining a healthy strike rate of nearly 100. His record includes eight centuries and 15 half-centuries.
Shubman Gill's limited leadership record in List-A
However, when it comes to leadership in the 50-over format, Gill’s experience is still very limited. In domestic one-day cricket, also known as List A, he has played 110 matches and scored at an average of 53.
But as a captain, he has only led on six occasions, where he managed five wins and just one defeat. While that record looks impressive, the sample size is too small to draw strong conclusions.
Matches | Won | Lost | Tied | No Result | Win% |

Final verdict
In conclusion, Gill’s captaincy record in one-day cricket may be short, but it is still quite encouraging. Because he has shown success in most of the games he led, there is every chance that he could continue this positive trend and achieve more in the upcoming series.
The white-ball series against Australia will therefore be an important opportunity for Gill to prove himself as ODI captain. He will not be entirely alone in this challenge, as the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still part of the squad and will no doubt provide guidance and support.
