On Saturday, October 4, India announced a multi-format tour for the upcoming Australia series starting on October 19. The announcement sent shockwaves through the internet as Rohit Sharma has been replaced by Shubman Gill as the new India ODI captain.

The decision marked the end of an important era in Indian cricket led by the hitman. Under Rohit's tenure, India ended their ICC trophy drought by lifting the  T20 World Cup 2024 and then also won the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Rohit's 2012 tweet resurfaces

The fans were upset by the change as they wanted Rohit to lead India going into the 2027 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, in the latest events, the hitman's 13-year-old tweet is going viral on the internet, where the hitman changed his jersey number to 77, which is Shubman Gill's current jersey no.

“End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77)," read Rohit's tweet in 2012.

The post is resurfacing on the internet after his sacking as India captain because the fans are assuming that the hitman has announced his retirement as well.

Further, the fans also pointed out the mother of all coincidences in this tweet as Rohit's 13-year-old tweet matches the current scenario, where the hitman has passed his baton to Shubman Gill, who is set to start a new era.

Why did Rohit Sharma Post the 'end of an era' tweet in 2012

Notably, in 2012, the hitman was out of runs and was struggling to cement his place in the team. Amid one of the attempts to change fortunes, Rohit Sharma changed his jersey number 45 and donned jersey No. 77 for a brief period.

It actually did help Rohit return to form, and the hitman didn't take long to return to his original jersey no. 45 which eventually turned out to be an iconic number and the hitman is often referred by his jersey number.
