Shubman Gill has been running in poor form in the fifty-over game for a long time, and his struggle continued in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The India ODI skipper failed to get a decent run against Goa while playing for Punjab in the January 6 clash.

Shubman Gill managed to get only 11 runs from 12 deliveries in the match, which also appears to be his first appearance in the prestigious domestic tournament.

Shubman Gill scores only 11 runs in VHT

Shubman Gill opened the innings alongside Prabhsimran Singh in response to Goa’s total of 211. During the chase, skipper Prabhsimran Singh was the first to lose his wicket inside the first three overs, while Shubman Gill followed in the fifth over.

Vasuki Koushik dismissed him with the first ball of his spell. Gill managed just 11 runs, scoring at a strike rate of 91.67, which included two boundaries.

Shubman's poor form since 2025

Notably, Shubman Gill’s last 50-plus score came against Bangladesh on February 20, 2025, when he struck a century. Since then, his returns have largely been single-digit scores, with only notable contributions of 46, 31, and 24, all falling short of a half-century.

This underlines his ongoing struggles with the bat. He also failed to make an impact in the only Vijay Hazare Trophy match he played after injury issues hampered him during the South Africa series.

Shubman Gill has been named captain for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11. For the uninitiated, training camps will be held in Vadodara, with the Indian team scheduled to arrive and begin preparations from January 7 onwards.

This meant that the match against Goa was Gill’s only opportunity to simulate a 50-over game ahead of the bilateral series, an opportunity he failed to capitalise on.

Gill gets strong backing in the ODI squad

Despite his continued failures, Gill has been backed by the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir for a prolonged period. However, statistics reveal that he has failed consecutively in seven ODIs, 15 T20Is, and in the current List A game as well.

Yet continues to retain his opening spot whenever he represents India, with selectors persisting in backing him while overlooking talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
